Why do "the 70s" run from 1972 to 1978? Well, from an artistic perspective that period falls between two major transitions in pop music. First there was the collapse of 60s rock in 1970-1971, with a long, long list of deaths and breakups. For a while, then, rock music fell to pieces artistically. But as you'll note from the following list, it's our opinion that plenty of good things were going on anyway, most importantly the rise of funk. Then in the late 70s, the advent of punk/new wave and the internal collapse of funk's poorer cousin disco gave rock a second wind - in our opinion, this wasn't such a great thing. Who needs to hear yet another Dire Straits record? Still, the decade was was fun while it lasted...
