Wilson & Alroy: Behind The Critics

Albums available in MP3 format on this page:
"works well in areas of his interest" - Early Midlife Crisis Squared - Share The Wealth - Don't Fuck With Us - We're Rock Critics - A Little Less Crappy - Santa Barbara Mix-Down - The Innermost Secrets Revealed! Sessions - The Brilliant 2001 Release That Silenced All Naysayers - Shut Up And Play Your Drum Machine

Inspired by Steve Coleman's recent decision to make nearly all his back catalog available online, your humble servants are following suit: most songs we've written and recorded, together or separately, are listed here. All songs written by the performers (special guests included) unless otherwise indicated. Since you can hear the songs for yourself, we're going to keep verbiage to a minimum, but we have put the "A-sides" in bold, and just like in real life, anything labeled "BONUS TRACK" totally sucks. (DBW)

Personnel:
John Alroy, lead guitar, lead vocals, bass, throat-clearing, sense of taste and decency; David B. Wilson, lead vocals, occasional guitar, bass, drum machine programming, amateurish keyboards, starry-eyed optimism

Early Midlife Crisis Squared (Wilson-Alroy Conspiracy: 1995)

  1. Traffic Flow/People I Don't Know
  2. Charlie Figures/In My Lab
  3. Charlie's Sleeping/Psychosymmetry
  4. Deep Fried Wonton
A mini-concept album recorded in the summer of 1995: the seven songs and numerous segues trace the career of a misanthropic scientist. As usual, the boys overexert themselves and often miss the mark, but Alroy cuts loose some scorching guitar solos ("Charlie Figures") and gripping vocals ("In My Lab"), and though Wilster is predictably lily-livered and corny ("Psychosymmetry"), he redeems himself with the anthem "Deep Fried Wonton." (DBW)
- "Wonton" rules. The rest, eh. Alroy is wildly off key on every vocal (as usual); it's a shame, because tracks like "In My Lab" and the experimental, if brain-dead "Charlie's Sleeping" deserved better. Wilson's parts sound rushed throughout; "Psychosymmetry" and "People I Don't Know" are the most tragic victims. (JA)

  8. Butt Butt Butt special guests: Jed Mosenfelder and Motoni Katayama
  9. Broken Storm
  10. Insect Song
  11. BONUS TRACK - Get On Up & Shake Your Butt
- Amazingly, "Fly To You" dates all the way back to 1990 - and the duo hasn't gotten much better since then, despite improvements in recording technology and earnest efforts to improve the lyrics. Although Motown's deadpan voiceover on "Butt" is completely hysterical, "Juan Valdez" is the tape's high point; now that you can hear the AU sample, you can skip buying it. The amazing slide guitar effect came courtesy of a commandeered magic marker. (JA)
